  • Frustrated mobile users who cringe every time an unsolicited SMS pops up and struggle to delete annoying forwards in their brimming inboxes at the end of every day can now heave a sigh of relief. FortiClient Mobile by security appliance maker Fortinet is a small application that you can download onto your mobile. It not only acts as an antivirus, but also blocks SMS-spam and filter out adult content. The software has an address book protection feature, which locks the contacts list so no changes can be made while you are logged onto a network. FortiClient Mobile also lets you schedule updates to the anti virus when convenient for you and offers Virtual Private Networking (VPN) to link to your office network. The SMS filter lets you blacklist spammers, and even lets you set a rule to automatically delete SMSs from unknown callers.

An additional firewall has been included in the application offering security at different levels. Operators in the Europe and some APAC countries offer this product as a service to their subscribers, said Mr Vishak Raman, Country Manager India, Fortinet Inc. However, Indian operators have shown no interest in the product. Security is far from their mind as they rush to cater to the entertainment demands of the Indian subscriber. When the 3G era begins, then the need for such security products on mobiles will heighten, said Mr Raman.

FortiClient Mobile is available from the company's website as a free download for a trial period of 30 days. With a footprint of 3 MB, it is suitable for smart phones and supports those running Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems.
